How to Get Your Alabama CDL License

The actual step-by-step process, from application to full license — not just what's on the exam. Confirm anything time-sensitive (fees, forms) with ALEA directly.

  1. Hold a valid Alabama Class D driver's license

    You need a valid noncommercial Alabama Class D driver's license before applying, and must be at least 18 to drive commercially within Alabama, or 21 to cross state lines or transport hazardous materials, under federal rules that apply nationwide.

  2. Get your DOT medical certificate

    Complete a DOT medical examination and self-certify to ALEA that you're medically qualified to operate a commercial vehicle.

  3. Pass the knowledge test(s)

    At a driver license office, pass the General Knowledge test, plus combination-vehicle and air-brake tests if applicable to your training vehicle.

  4. Pay the testing and issuance fees

    Pay a $25 testing fee plus a separate $36.25 issuance fee to receive your Commercial Learner's Permit, valid for 360 days.

  5. Hold the CLP at least 14 days

    Federal rule requires holding the CLP for a minimum of 14 days before scheduling the skills test. Unlike some states, Alabama's CLP can't be renewed at all once it expires.

  6. Complete entry-level driver training (ELDT)

    Per federal regulations, entry-level driver training through an approved provider is required for anyone obtaining a CDL for the first time.

  7. Schedule and pass the skills test

    Book the skills test: a pre-trip inspection and an on-road driving evaluation for the CDL class you applied for.

  8. Receive your CDL

    Once you pass, ALEA issues your Class A, B, or C commercial driver's license, with any endorsements reflecting the additional tests you passed.

Notes

  • Commercial drivers are held to a 0.04% BAC threshold, half the standard 0.08% figure that applies to a regular passenger-vehicle driver.
  • If your CLP expires before you complete the skills test, you must retake all required written tests and be issued a brand-new CLP — there's no partial credit.
