How to Get Your Alabama Motorcycle License

Standard Process

  1. Apply for a motorcycle permit

    Apply at a driver license office; you'll need to pass the motorcycle knowledge test and a vision screening.

  2. Pass the written knowledge test

    Pass the 30-question motorcycle knowledge test (80%, 24 correct) — the same length as the regular permit test.

  3. Wear required protective gear while practicing

    Alabama's helmet law is fully universal — you must wear a compliant helmet with a chinstrap and solid exterior regardless of age.

  4. Pass the skills test

    Pass the motorcycle road skills test to have the endorsement added to your license.

Approved Motorcycle Safety Class

  1. Enroll in an approved motorcycle safety class

    Enroll in an ALEA-approved motorcycle safety class as an alternative to a standalone knowledge exam.

  2. Complete the class

    Complete the classroom and on-motorcycle training required by the class provider.
