How to Get Your Alaska Motorcycle License

The actual step-by-step process, from application to full license — not just what's on the exam. Confirm anything time-sensitive (fees, forms) with Alaska DMV directly.

Full Endorsement (16 and older)

  1. Pass the knowledge test

    Pass the 25-question motorcycle knowledge test (80%, 20 correct) at a DMV office.

  2. Choose an endorsement class

    Choose M1 for any motorcycle, or M2 if you'll only ride a motor-driven cycle of 50cc or less.

  3. Pass the skills test

    Schedule and pass a skills test to complete the endorsement process.

  4. Receive your endorsement

    Once you pass, the M1 or M2 endorsement is added to your existing driver's license.

Instruction Permit (under 18)

  1. Complete an approved safety course

    Anyone under 18 must complete an approved motorcycle safety course before an instruction permit can be issued.

  2. Apply for an instruction permit

    A permit can be issued as early as 14 with parental consent, once the safety course and knowledge test are complete.

  3. Ride only with a qualifying supervisor

    A permit holder under 18 must ride alongside a separate rider at least 21 years old holding a valid endorsement, on their own motorcycle, not as a passenger.

  4. Wear a helmet regardless of age

    Anyone riding under an instruction permit must wear a helmet, even past 18, until the full endorsement is issued.

Notes

  • Alaska's DMV is organized under the Department of Revenue rather than a transportation agency.
  • Once a rider turns 18 and holds the full endorsement, the age-based helmet requirement no longer applies to them.
  • Moose activity, especially at dawn and dusk, is a genuine road hazard covered in the state's own manual. Exact fees and current procedures change over time — confirm the current process with the official Alaska DMV website before you ride.
