How to Get Your Arkansas Permit License

Under 18 (Graduated Licensing)

  1. Apply for a learner's license at 14

    Apply at an OMV office with parent or guardian consent. Pass the 25-question knowledge test (80%, 20 correct), given computer-based or orally, and a vision test.

    • Birth certificate or equivalent
    • Proof of Social Security number and residency
    • Parent or guardian signature

  2. Drive only with a qualifying supervisor

    A licensed driver at least 21 years old must be in the vehicle at all times.

  3. Hold the permit 6 clean months

    Hold the learner's license for at least 6 months with no traffic violations or accidents before applying for an intermediate license.

  4. Apply for your intermediate license at 16

    Once you've turned 16 and met the clean-record holding period, receive an intermediate license.

  5. Have an adult in the vehicle for the first 6 months

    An adult must be present in the vehicle for the first 6 months of holding an intermediate license.

  6. Follow intermediate license restrictions

    No driving 11 p.m.-4 a.m. unless with a driver 21+ or for school, church, or work. No more than one unrelated minor passenger without a 21+ driver in the front seat. No cell phone or wireless device use except for emergencies.

  7. Maintain a clean record for a full year

    At 18, move to a regular, unrestricted license, contingent on a clean driving record for the previous year.

18 and Older

  1. Apply for a learner's license

    Apply at an OMV office; the graduated stages and their restrictions apply only to an applicant who starts before turning 18.

  2. Pass the knowledge test

    Pass the same 25-question knowledge test (80%, 20 correct) and a vision test.

    • Proof of identity, Social Security number, and residency

  3. Practice and pass the road test

    Practice driving under the terms of your learner's license, then pass the road test to receive your license.

  4. Receive your full license

    Adult first-time applicants receive a standard, unrestricted license upon passing.

  • Arkansas's licensing agency is the Office of Motor Vehicle (OMV) — the state doesn't use a "DMV" name.
  • Arkansas law refers to drunk driving as DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) rather than "DUI."
