How to Get Your Colorado CDL License

The actual step-by-step process, from application to full license — not just what's on the exam. Confirm anything time-sensitive (fees, forms) with Colorado DMV directly.

  1. Hold a valid Colorado driver's license

    You need a valid noncommercial Colorado driver's license before applying, and must be at least 18 to drive commercially within Colorado, or 21 to cross state lines or transport hazardous materials, under federal rules that apply nationwide.

  2. Get your DOT medical certificate

    Complete a DOT medical examination (no more than 2 years old) and self-certify to the DMV that you're medically qualified to operate a commercial vehicle.

  3. Pass the knowledge test(s)

    At a driver license office, pass the General Knowledge test, plus combination-vehicle and air-brake tests if applicable to your training vehicle.

  4. Pay the fee and obtain your CLP

    Pay the $19 CLP fee, among the lowest in the country, to receive your Commercial Learner's Permit, valid for one full year.

  5. Hold the CLP at least 14 days

    Federal rule requires holding the CLP for a minimum of 14 days before scheduling the skills test. Unlike some states, Colorado's CLP can't be renewed at all once it expires, so plan your training timeline within that single year.

  6. Complete entry-level driver training (ELDT)

    Federal rule requires theory and behind-the-wheel training through an FMCSA-registered provider before the skills test.

  7. Schedule and pass the skills test

    Book the skills test at an approved third-party testing facility: a pre-trip inspection and an on-road driving evaluation for the CDL class you applied for.

  8. Receive your CDL

    Once you pass, the DMV issues your Class A, B, or C commercial driver's license, with any endorsements reflecting the additional tests you passed.

  • Commercial drivers are held to a 0.04% BAC threshold, half the standard 0.08% figure that applies to a regular passenger-vehicle driver.
