How to Get a CDL Permit in Colorado
One thing sets Colorado's CDL process apart: the commercial learner's permit (CLP) costs only $19 — one of the lowest fees nationally — but as of a 2024 rule change, it's valid for a full year and can't be renewed at all.
Line up your documents first
Colorado requires a valid noncommercial Colorado driver's license and documentation proving your eligibility before a CLP application can be processed.
A DOT medical examination (no more than 2 years old) and self-certification that you're medically qualified to drive commercially are also required.
Pass the knowledge test and pay the fee
