How to Get Your Colorado Permit License

The actual step-by-step process, from application to full license — not just what's on the exam. Confirm anything time-sensitive (fees, forms) with Colorado DMV directly.

Under 18 (Minor Driver)

  1. Apply for an instruction permit at 15

    Apply for a Colorado instruction permit starting at age 15.

  2. Pass the knowledge test — in person or via @HOME

    Pass the 25-question knowledge test (80%, 20 correct) either at a driver license office or remotely through the webcam-proctored @HOME platform, then visit a driver license office in person to have the permit issued.

  3. Log 50 hours of supervised driving

    Log at least 50 hours of supervised driving with the Colorado-licensed parent/guardian who signed the Affidavit of Liability, or their appointed alternate, including a minimum of 10 hours after dark.

  4. Hold the permit at least 12 months

    Colorado requires holding the instruction permit for at least 12 months before applying for a minor driver's license.

  5. Apply for your minor driver's license

    Once you've met the 12-month holding period and supervised-hour requirements, pass the road test to receive a minor driver's license, which lets you drive without a supervising adult.

  6. Follow minor driver's license restrictions

    First 6 months: only passengers 21 or older. Next 6 months: add one passenger under 21. First 12 months: no driving midnight-5 a.m. unless a parent/guardian is along or the trip is for work, school, or a medical emergency.

  7. Move to a full license

    Once you turn 18, or complete 12 violation-free months (whichever comes first), full driving privileges are granted automatically.

18 and Older

  1. Apply for an instruction permit

    Apply for an instruction permit at any age 18 or older; the minor-license restrictions don't apply to this path.

  2. Pass the knowledge test

    Pass the same 25-question knowledge test (80%, 20 correct), either in person or via the @HOME platform.

  3. Practice and pass the road test

    Practice driving under the terms of your instruction permit, then pass the road test to receive your license.

  4. Receive your full license

    Adult first-time applicants receive a standard, unrestricted license upon passing — Colorado's minor-license restrictions apply specifically to applicants who start the process before turning 18.

  • Colorado's zero-tolerance law (0.02% BAC for under-21 drivers) and total cell phone ban for drivers under 18 apply regardless of which licensing path an applicant takes.
