How to Get Your Connecticut CDL License
The actual step-by-step process, from application to full license — not just what's on the exam. Confirm anything time-sensitive (fees, forms) with CT DMV directly.
Hold a valid noncommercial Connecticut license
You need a valid noncommercial Connecticut driver's license before applying, and must be at least 18 to drive commercially within Connecticut, or 21 to cross state lines or transport hazardous materials, under federal rules that apply nationwide.
Complete your medical exam and clearinghouse registration
Complete a physical examination with a Certified Medical Examiner, and register with the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
- Medical Examiner's Certificate
Self-certify and pass the knowledge test(s)
Self-certify with DMV as to intrastate or interstate operation, then pass the General Knowledge test ($16), plus combination-vehicle and air-brake tests if applicable.
- Proof of Connecticut residency
Pay the fee and obtain your CLP
Pay the $10 permit fee to receive your Commercial Learner's Permit, valid for a full year.
Complete entry-level driver training (ELDT)
Since February 2022, federal rule requires theory and behind-the-wheel training through an authorized provider before applying for your first CDL.
Schedule and pass the skills test
Book the skills test: a pre-trip inspection and an on-road driving evaluation for the CDL class you applied for.
Receive your CDL
Once you pass, DMV issues your Class A, B, or C commercial driver's license, with any endorsements reflecting the additional tests you passed.
Notes
- Commercial drivers are held to a 0.04% BAC threshold, half the standard 0.08% figure that applies to a regular passenger-vehicle driver.
- Connecticut's CLP is valid for a full year — longer than many other states — but every test must be retaken if you don't get your CDL within that window.
- Exact fees and required documents change over time — confirm the current process on the official Connecticut DMV website before your appointment.
