How to Get Your Delaware CDL License

The actual step-by-step process, from application to full license — not just what's on the exam. Confirm anything time-sensitive (fees, forms) with Delaware DMV directly.

  1. Decide your class and gather original documents

    Decide which class (A, B, or C) and any endorsements you'll need up front. Bring only original documents or certified copies — photocopies aren't accepted.

    • Proof of identity, Social Security number, and residency

  2. Get your medical certificate

    Complete a medical examination confirming you meet federal physical standards to operate a commercial vehicle.

  3. Walk in and pass the knowledge test(s)

    Pass the General Knowledge test (50 questions, 80%) walk-in at any Division of Motor Vehicles facility, plus any additional endorsement test needed.

  4. Pay $5 and receive your CLP

    Pay $5 and receive your commercial learner's permit once you pass; it's valid for a full year.

  5. Complete entry-level driver training (ELDT)

    Federal rule requires theory and behind-the-wheel training through an authorized provider before applying for your first CDL.

  6. Schedule and pass the skills test

    Book the skills test: a pre-trip inspection and an on-road driving evaluation for the CDL class you applied for.

  7. Receive your CDL

    Once you pass, receive your Class A, B, or C commercial driver's license, with any endorsements reflecting the additional tests you passed.

  • Commercial drivers are held to a 0.04% BAC threshold, half the standard 0.08% figure that applies to a regular passenger-vehicle driver.
  • Delaware's CLP stays valid for a full year, longer than the 180-day validity common in many other states.
