How to Get Your Florida CDL License

The actual step-by-step process, from application to full license — not just what's on the exam. Confirm anything time-sensitive (fees, forms) with FLHSMV directly.

  1. Hold a valid Florida Class E license

    You must already hold a valid noncommercial Class E driver's license. All commercial permit and license applicants must be at least 18, and you must be 21 to cross state lines or transport hazardous materials, under federal rules that apply nationwide.

  2. Gather Florida residency documentation

    Florida requires two proofs of Florida residential address in your name: one from "List A" and one from "List B," or two from List A.

  3. Get your DOT medical certificate

    Complete a DOT medical examination with a certified examiner, meeting both federal and Florida medical certification requirements, and obtain a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate.

  4. Complete entry-level driver training (ELDT)

    First-time CDL applicants must complete applicable ELDT with an FMCSA-registered provider before taking the CDL skills test or hazardous materials knowledge test.

  5. Book an appointment and pass the CDL General Knowledge exam

    Appointments are required for all CDL exams. First-time applicants must pass the CDL General Knowledge exam before any other commercial knowledge tests. Your CLP is issued as part of this same appointment.

  6. Hold the CLP at least 14 days

    Federal rule requires holding your CLP for a minimum of 14 days before taking the skills test. The Florida CLP is valid for 180 days, and can be renewed once for another 180 days.

  7. Complete behind-the-wheel ELDT training

    Alongside the theory portion, federal rule requires documented behind-the-wheel training hours and proficiency assessments from your ELDT provider before the skills test.

  8. Pass the CDL skills test within 1 year

    Florida requires passing the applicable skills exam and having your full CDL issued within one year of your CDL General Knowledge exam pass date, or you'll need to retest. The skills test covers a pre-trip vehicle inspection, basic vehicle control, and an on-road evaluation.

  9. Receive your CDL

    Once you pass, FLHSMV issues your Class A, B, or C commercial driver's license, with any endorsements (such as passenger, school bus, or hazardous materials) reflecting the additional tests you passed.

  • Endorsements like passenger (P), school bus (S), or hazardous materials (H) require their own knowledge tests, and for P/S/H, their own ELDT curriculum, in addition to the general knowledge test.
