Is There a Written Test for a Florida Motorcycle Endorsement?

Unlike states such as California and Texas, Florida doesn't have a standalone FLHSMV-administered written knowledge test just for motorcycle endorsements. Since 2008, nearly all new applicants, regardless of age, must complete the Basic RiderCourse (BRC), which satisfies both the knowledge and skills requirements in one course.

Why there's no separate written exam

Some states require riders to pass a dedicated motorcycle knowledge test at a DMV or DPS office, on top of a rider training course. Florida consolidated this: completing an FLHSMV-authorized Basic RiderCourse (BRC) satisfies the knowledge requirement and the skills requirement together, so a separate written motorcycle exam generally isn't part of the process for new endorsements.

This applies broadly, not just to younger or first-time riders — Florida generally does not exempt experienced or older riders from the BRC requirement when adding a new motorcycle endorsement.

What the Basic RiderCourse actually covers

The BRC combines classroom-style knowledge instruction with hands-on riding exercises covering protective gear, basic control, braking, cornering, and hazard awareness, delivered through an FLHSMV-authorized provider.

Because course structure and any internal knowledge checks are set by the BRC curriculum and provider rather than published by FLHSMV as a fixed question count, confirm what to expect directly with your chosen BRC provider before you enroll.

How our practice questions still help

Even without a separate written exam, understanding the same knowledge (protective gear, lane positioning, cornering, braking, Florida's helmet and eye-protection rules) makes the BRC's riding exercises easier and builds real, transferable riding judgment.

Our free Florida motorcycle practice tests cover 100 original questions across 14 topic areas with full explanations, so you walk into your course already comfortable with the concepts instead of learning them for the first time on the range.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to pass a written motorcycle exam at an FLHSMV office in Florida?

Generally no. Since 2008, completing an approved Basic RiderCourse (BRC) has satisfied both the knowledge and skills requirements for nearly all new motorcycle endorsement applicants, replacing a separate written exam.

Is the BRC required for experienced riders too?

Generally yes. Florida's BRC requirement for a new endorsement applies regardless of age or prior riding experience; confirm any narrow exceptions (such as certain out-of-state license transfers) directly with FLHSMV.

If there's no written test, why practice with these questions?

The BRC still expects you to understand the same rules of the road and riding fundamentals this content covers. Going in with strong knowledge makes the course's hands-on exercises easier and makes you a safer rider afterward.
