How to Get Your Georgia CDL License

The actual step-by-step process, from application to full license — not just what's on the exam. Confirm anything time-sensitive (fees, forms) with Georgia DDS directly.

  1. Hold a valid Georgia driver's license

    You must be at least 18 and hold a valid noncommercial Georgia driver's license. Federal rule requires being 21 to cross state lines or transport hazardous materials. All applicants must be able to read and understand English.

  2. Pass a DOT physical

    Complete a DOT medical examination with a certified examiner, confirming you meet federal physical qualification standards.

  3. Complete entry-level driver training (ELDT)

    Federal rule requires training through an FMCSA-registered provider before you can take the CDL skills test, for first-time Class A/B applicants and anyone adding a Hazmat, Passenger, or School Bus endorsement.

  4. Pay the permit fee and pass the knowledge test(s)

    At a DDS Customer Service Center, pay the $10 permit fee and pass the required written knowledge exams: General Knowledge for all applicants, plus Air Brakes and Combination Vehicles for Class A.

    • DOT medical certificate
    • Proof of identity

  5. Hold the CLP at least 14 days

    Federal rule requires holding your Commercial Instructional Permit for a minimum of 14 days before applying for a full CDL. Georgia's CLP is valid for 365 days.

  6. Complete behind-the-wheel ELDT training

    Alongside the theory portion, federal rule requires documented behind-the-wheel training hours and proficiency assessments from your ELDT provider before the skills test.

  7. Pass the CDL skills test

    A three-part exam at a qualifying DDS location: a verbal pre-trip inspection, a basic controls test (such as backing through cones), and a road test with a state examiner. The road skills test fee is $50.

  8. Receive your CDL

    Once you pass, pay the $32 CDL issuance fee and receive your Class A, B, or C commercial driver's license, with any endorsements reflecting the additional tests you passed.
