How to Get Your Georgia Motorcycle License

The actual step-by-step process, from application to full license — not just what's on the exam. Confirm anything time-sensitive (fees, forms) with Georgia DDS directly.

Under 18

  1. Complete Joshua's Law requirements

    Riders under 18 must complete Georgia's Joshua's Law requirements (driver education and supervised driving hours) as part of the broader graduated licensing process, in addition to any motorcycle-specific steps.

  2. Get your Class MP motorcycle learner's permit

    Available as early as age 16, letting you practice riding under permit restrictions before your road test.

  3. Complete the Georgia Motorcycle Safety Program (GMSP) course

    A 2-3 day course for new riders: a 5-hour eCourse, 5 hours of classroom instruction, and 10 hours of riding, with motorcycles and helmets provided. If you're under 18, a parent or legal guardian must accompany you to the first class meeting to sign a waiver form. Passing the course's knowledge test and on-cycle skills evaluation earns a 90-day Motorcycle License Test Waiver.

    • GMSP course completion (90-day test waiver)
    • Parent/guardian waiver signature (if under 18)

  4. Reach age 17 before the waiver expires

    You must be at least 17 before your 90-day GMSP waiver expires in order to actually receive the Class M license — completing the course earlier than that doesn't shorten the age requirement.

  5. Receive your Class M license

    Once you're 17 or older and within the waiver window, visit a DDS Customer Service Center to have the Class M motorcycle license issued.

18 and Older

  1. Get your Class MP motorcycle learner's permit

    Apply at a DDS Customer Service Center to practice riding under permit restrictions before testing.

  2. Choose a path: GMSP course or direct DDS testing

    Complete the Georgia Motorcycle Safety Program course (a 2-3 day program combining an eCourse, classroom instruction, and riding practice, with motorcycles and helmets provided), which earns a 90-day test waiver, or skip the course and test directly at a DDS Customer Service Center.

  3. Pass the knowledge and skills tests, if testing directly

    Bring your own motorcycle to pass the written knowledge test, an on-cycle skills evaluation, and a vision test (waivable if you passed one within the past year for another license).

  4. Receive your Class M license

    Once you pass the GMSP course (within its 90-day waiver window) or the DDS tests directly, your Class M motorcycle license is issued.

  • The minimum age for a Class MP learner's permit is 16; the minimum age to hold the full Class M license is 17.
