How to Get Your Idaho CDL License

The actual step-by-step process, from application to full license — not just what's on the exam. Confirm anything time-sensitive (fees, forms) with Idaho DMV directly.

  1. Hold a valid regular Idaho license

You need a valid regular Idaho driver's license before applying, and must be at least 18 to drive commercially within Idaho, or 21 to cross state lines or transport hazardous materials, under federal rules that apply nationwide.

  2. Get your medical certificate

Complete a medical examination confirming you meet federal physical standards to operate a commercial vehicle.

    • Medical Examiner's Certificate
  3. Pay the application fee

Pay the $40 CDL application fee before testing.

  4. Pass the knowledge test(s)

Pay $3 per written test and pass the General Knowledge test (50 questions, 80%), plus combination-vehicle and air-brake tests if applicable.

  5. Pay the CLP fee and receive your permit

Pay the $29 CLP fee to receive your commercial learner's permit, valid for one year from issuance.

  6. Wait out the mandatory 14-day holding period

Federal rule requires holding the CLP for at least 14 days before the skills test can be scheduled.

  7. Pay the skills test fee and pass the skills test

Pay the $70 skills test fee and pass a pre-trip inspection and on-road driving evaluation for the CDL class you applied for.

  8. Receive your CDL

Once you pass, receive your Class A, B, or C commercial driver's license, with any endorsements reflecting the additional tests you passed.

Notes

  • Commercial drivers are held to a 0.04% BAC threshold, half the standard 0.08% figure that applies to a regular passenger-vehicle driver.
  • Idaho's $3 per-attempt written test fee is comparatively low; the $40 application fee and $70 skills test fee make up the bulk of the total cost.
  • Exact fees and required documents change over time — confirm the current process on the official Idaho DMV website before your appointment.
