How to Get Your Idaho Motorcycle License

The actual step-by-step process, from application to full license — not just what's on the exam. Confirm anything time-sensitive (fees, forms) with Idaho DMV directly.

  1. Pass the motorcycle knowledge test

Pass the 25-question motorcycle knowledge test (80%, 20 correct) before purchasing the permit.

  2. Pay the permit fee

Pay the $5 motorcycle permit fee to receive your permit.

  3. Complete an MSF course if under 21

An applicant under 21 must complete a Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) course before earning an endorsement.

    • MSF course completion certificate (if under 21)
  4. Pass the skills test

Pass a skills test covering a pre-ride inspection, on-cycle maneuvering, and a road test.

  5. Wear a helmet if under 18

Any operator or passenger under 18 must wear a protective safety helmet; Idaho has no helmet requirement for an adult rider.

Notes

  • Idaho's knowledge and skills test results stay valid for up to one year once passed.
  • A mountain pass can ice over suddenly even when the valley below stays clear — a real hazard worth planning for.
  • Exact fees and DMV scheduling change over time — confirm the current process on the official Idaho DMV website before you ride.
