How to Get Your Indiana Motorcycle License

Standard Process

  1. Apply for a motorcycle learner's permit

    Apply at a BMV branch; you'll need to pass the motorcycle knowledge test and a vision screening.

  2. Pass the written knowledge test

    Pass the 25-question motorcycle knowledge test, requiring 84% (21 correct) — a higher threshold than the regular permit test's roughly 80% sections.

  3. Practice under permit restrictions

    As a permit holder, you must wear a DOT-approved helmet, ride only during daylight hours, and cannot carry a passenger.

  4. Pass the skills test

    Pass the on-cycle skills test at a BMV branch to have the motorcycle endorsement added to your license.

Approved Rider Training Course

  1. Enroll in an approved motorcycle rider training course

    Enroll in an Indiana-approved rider training course as an alternative to testing directly at a BMV branch.

  2. Complete the classroom and riding sessions

    Complete both the classroom instruction and on-motorcycle riding sessions required by the course.

  3. Have the skills test waived

    Present your course completion certificate to the BMV; successfully finishing an approved course typically waives the on-cycle skills test.

  4. Receive your motorcycle endorsement
