How to Get Your Iowa CDL License

Hold a valid noncommercial Iowa Class C license
You need a valid noncommercial Iowa Class C license before applying, and must be at least 18 to drive commercially within Iowa, or 21 to cross state lines or transport hazardous materials, under federal rules that apply nationwide.
Provide identity and residency documents
Provide proof of citizenship, lawful permanent residency, or valid work authorization, plus proof of Iowa residency.
- Certified birth certificate, passport, or similar document
Pass the knowledge test(s) and pay the CLP fee
Pass the General Knowledge test, plus combination-vehicle and air-brake tests if applicable. Pay the $12 CLP fee, which already includes the knowledge test.
Receive your CLP
Your commercial learner's permit is valid for one year, with no renewal option — plan your next steps within that window.
Complete entry-level driver training (ELDT)
Since February 2022, federal rule requires theory and behind-the-wheel training through an authorized provider before applying for your first CDL.
Schedule and pass the skills test
Book the skills test: a pre-trip inspection and an on-road driving evaluation for the CDL class you applied for.
Receive your CDL
Once you pass, the Iowa DOT issues your Class A, B, or C commercial driver's license for the $16 CDL license fee, with any endorsements reflecting the additional tests you passed.

- Commercial drivers are held to a 0.04% BAC threshold, half the standard 0.08% figure that applies to a regular passenger-vehicle driver.
