How to Get a CDL Permit in Iowa

You need a valid Iowa noncommercial Class C driver's license before applying, and must be at least 18 to drive commercially within Iowa, or 21 to cross state lines or transport hazardous materials, under federal rules that apply nationwide.

Provide proof of citizenship (a certified birth certificate or passport, for example), lawful permanent residency, or valid work authorization, plus proof of Iowa residency.

Pass the General Knowledge test, plus combination-vehicle and air-brake tests if applicable to your training vehicle.

Pay the $12 CLP fee — already inclusive of the knowledge test — to receive your commercial learner's permit, valid for one year with no renewal option.

Since February 2022, federal rule requires completing entry-level driver training (ELDT) through an authorized provider before applying for your first CDL.
