How to Get Your Iowa Motorcycle License

The actual step-by-step process, from application to full license — not just what's on the exam. Confirm anything time-sensitive (fees, forms) with Iowa DOT directly.

  1. Apply for a motorcycle instruction permit at 14

    Apply at a DOT office; pass a vision test and the motorcycle written knowledge test. Pay the additional $2-per-year permit fee.

  2. Pass the written knowledge test

    Pass the 25-question motorcycle knowledge test (80%, 20 correct).

  3. Complete a basic motorcycle safety course if under 18

    Complete a DOT-approved basic motorcycle safety course.

  4. Ride only with a qualifying supervisor if 18 or older

    An 18-or-older permit holder must be supervised by a parent/guardian, an immediate family member 21 or older, or another endorsed adult 25 or older.

  5. Wear required protective gear if under 18

    Any operator or passenger under 18 must wear a safety helmet; Iowa has no such requirement once a rider turns 18.

  6. Apply for an intermediate license at 16, full license at 17

    Progress through the intermediate motorcycle license at 16 to a full, unrestricted motorcycle license at 17.

Notes

  • Iowa is one of only three states with no motorcycle helmet law for a rider 18 or older.
  • Loose gravel shoulders and unmarked farm-equipment crossings on rural county roads are a real hazard worth extra caution around.
