How to Get Your Kansas CDL License

Hold a valid noncommercial Kansas license
You need a valid noncommercial Kansas driver's license before applying, and must be at least 18 to drive commercially within Kansas, or 21 to cross state lines or transport hazardous materials, under federal rules that apply nationwide.
Get your medical certificate
Complete a medical examination confirming you meet federal physical standards to operate a commercial vehicle.

Pass the knowledge test(s)
Pass the 50-question General Knowledge test (80% required), plus combination-vehicle and air-brake tests if applicable, at an authorized Kansas Department of Revenue office.
Pay the CLP fee and receive your permit
Pay about $13 total ($5 permit fee plus $8 photo fee) to receive your commercial learner's permit, valid for 12 months from issuance.

Complete entry-level driver training (ELDT)

- Commercial drivers are held to a 0.04% BAC threshold, half the standard 0.08% figure that applies to a regular passenger-vehicle driver.
- Kansas's 12-month CLP window is longer than the six-month window several neighboring states use, but the 14-day wait before the skills test still applies regardless.
