How to Get Your Kansas Motorcycle License

The actual step-by-step process, from application to full license — not just what's on the exam. Confirm anything time-sensitive (fees, forms) with Kansas DOV directly.

  1. Apply for a Class M instruction permit

    Apply at a DOV exam station; pass a vision test and the 25-question motorcycle knowledge test (80%, 20 correct).

  2. Consider an MSF-approved training course

    Completing a Motorcycle Safety Foundation-approved course typically waives the riding skills test, though the written knowledge test still has to be passed.

    • Training course completion certificate (if applicable)

  3. Practice under permit restrictions

    Practice riding under the terms of your instruction permit before scheduling the skills test, if one is still required.

  4. Pass the skills test and receive your Class M license

    Once you pass the skills test (or complete a waiving MSF course), receive your standard Class M motorcycle license, available starting at age 16.

  5. Wear required protective gear if under 18

    Any operator or passenger under 18 must wear a helmet meeting federal safety standards, plus eye protection unless the motorcycle has a windshield.

  • Kansas doesn't offer a separate, younger-rider motorcycle license tier — the standard Class M license starts at 16.
  • Flat, open terrain across much of Kansas makes sudden crosswinds a real riding hazard worth planning for.
