How to Get a CDL Permit in Louisiana

Louisiana requires a valid Class A, B, C, D, or E license from the same jurisdiction, a current Medical Examiner's Certificate, and proof of Louisiana residency before a CLP application can be processed.

You must be at least 18 years old to apply, and a CDL Supplemental Form (DPSMV2211) is also required.

At the OMV, pass the General Knowledge test, plus combination-vehicle and air-brake tests if applicable to the class and vehicle you're training on — retakes cost nothing extra.

Pay the $15 CLP fee. Since February 2022, federal rule requires completing entry-level driver training (ELDT) through an authorized provider before applying for your first CDL.

Federal rule requires holding the CLP for at least 14 days before applying for the full CDL. Louisiana's CLP is valid for 60 days — a shorter window than many other states use.

Complete your behind-the-wheel ELDT training well within that window, since the CDL application can't proceed until that training is documented.

Passing gets you your Class A, B, or C license, with any endorsements reflecting the additional tests you passed along the way.
