How to Get Your Maine CDL License

Decide which endorsements you need
Identify any endorsements required for your training vehicle up front — passenger (P), school bus (S), tank vehicles (N), hazmat (H), or doubles/triples (T) — since each needs its own knowledge test.
Get your medical certificate and gather original documents
Complete a medical examination confirming you meet federal physical standards to operate a commercial vehicle. Bring only original documents or certified copies — photocopies aren't accepted.

Pass the knowledge test(s)
Pass the General Knowledge test (50 questions, 80%) at a BMV office, plus any additional endorsement test needed.
Pay $35 and receive your CLP
Pay the $35 commercial learner's permit application fee and receive your CLP once you pass.
Complete entry-level driver training (ELDT)
Federal rule requires theory and behind-the-wheel training through an authorized provider before applying for your first CDL.
Schedule and pass the skills test
Book the skills test: a pre-trip inspection and an on-road driving evaluation for the CDL class you applied for.
Pay $70 and receive your CDL
Pay the $70 full CDL exam fee, plus $20 for each additional endorsement, and receive your Class A, B, or C commercial driver's license.
