How to Get Your Maine Permit License

The actual step-by-step process, from application to full license — not just what's on the exam. Confirm anything time-sensitive (fees, forms) with Maine BMV directly.

Under 21

  1. Apply for a learner's permit at 15

    Apply at a BMV office with parent or guardian consent. Pass the 30-question knowledge test (80%, 24 correct) and a vision screening.

    • Birth certificate or equivalent
    • Proof of Social Security number and residency
    • Parent or guardian signature

  2. Drive only with a qualifying supervisor

    A supervisor must sit in the front seat, be at least 20 years old, and have held a license for at least 2 years.

  3. Log 70 hours of supervised driving

    Complete at least 70 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night, verified by a driving log form signed by a parent or guardian.

  4. Complete driver's education

    Complete an approved driver's education course covering both classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction.

  5. Hold the permit at least 6 months

    Hold the learner's permit for at least 6 months before becoming eligible for the road test.

  6. Pass the road test and receive an intermediate license

    Once eligible, pass the road test at a BMV office to receive an intermediate license.

  7. Follow intermediate license restrictions for 270 days

    No driving midnight to 5 a.m., no passengers besides immediate family unless a qualifying licensed operator is also present, and no cell phone use of any kind, even hands-free.

21 and Older

  1. Apply for a learner's permit

    Apply at a BMV office; the 6-month hold and hour-logging requirements apply only to an applicant who starts before turning 21.

  2. Pass the knowledge test

    Pass the same 30-question knowledge test (80%, 24 correct) and a vision screening.

    • Proof of identity, Social Security number, and residency

  3. Practice and pass the road test

    Practice driving under the terms of the learner's permit, with no waiting period required, then pass the road test to receive a license.

  4. Receive your full license

    An adult first-time applicant receives a standard, unrestricted license upon passing, without any intermediate-license restrictions.
