How to Get a CDL Permit in Maryland

You must already hold a valid noncommercial Maryland Class C or higher driver's license before applying for a CLP.

A DOT medical examination and self-certification that you're medically qualified to drive commercially are also required.

At an MVA office, pass the General Knowledge test, plus any additional tests (like Air Brakes or Combination Vehicles) that apply to the class and vehicle you're training on.

Pay the $90 CLP fee, which covers the CDLIS record check and skills test fees together. Federal rule requires completing entry-level driver training (ELDT) through an FMCSA-registered provider before the skills test.

Federal rule still requires holding the CLP for at least 14 days before scheduling the skills test. Maryland's CLP is valid for 6 months.

Complete your behind-the-wheel ELDT training during this window, since the skills test can't be scheduled until that training is documented.
