How to Get Your Maryland Motorcycle License

Standard Process

  1. Apply for a Class M motorcycle permit

    Apply at an MVA office; you'll need to pass the motorcycle knowledge test and a vision screening.

  2. Pass the written knowledge test

    Pass the 25-question motorcycle knowledge test (88%, 22 correct), the same demanding threshold as the regular permit test.

  3. Practice with the motorcycle permit

    Practice riding under the terms of your motorcycle permit before scheduling the skills test.

  4. Pass the skills test

    Pass the on-cycle skills test at an MVA office to have the Class M classification added to your license.

Approved Motorcycle Safety Course

  1. Enroll in an approved motorcycle safety course

    Enroll in a Maryland-approved motorcycle safety course as an alternative to testing directly at an MVA office.

  2. Complete the course

    Complete the classroom and on-motorcycle training required by the course provider.

    • Course completion certificate

  3. Have both tests waived

    Present your course completion certificate to the MVA; completing an approved course can waive both the written and skills tests for many applicants.

  4. Receive your Class M classification

    Once the waiver is processed, the Class M classification is added to your existing license.

Notes

  • Maryland has a universal helmet law — every operator and passenger, of every age, must wear a helmet meeting FMVSS 218.
  • Lane splitting is prohibited at all times in Maryland; a motorcycle must occupy a full lane like any other vehicle.
