Standard Process
Apply for a motorcycle permit
Apply at an RMV Service Center; you'll need to pass the motorcycle knowledge test and a vision screening.
Pass the written knowledge test
Pass the 25-question motorcycle knowledge test (72%, 18 correct), the same length and threshold as the regular permit test.
Practice with the motorcycle permit
Practice riding under the terms of your motorcycle permit before scheduling the skills test.
Pass the skills test
Pass the on-cycle skills test at an RMV Service Center to have the motorcycle classification added to your license.
Approved Rider Education Program
Enroll in an approved Rider Education Program course
Enroll in a Massachusetts-approved Rider Education Program course as an alternative to testing directly at an RMV Service Center.
Complete the course
Complete the classroom and on-motorcycle training required by the course provider.

Have both tests waived
Present your course completion certificate to the RMV; completing an approved course can waive both the written and skills tests for many applicants.
Receive your motorcycle classification
Once the waiver is processed, the motorcycle classification is added to your existing license.

- Massachusetts has a universal helmet law — every operator and passenger, of every age, must wear a helmet certified to either DOT or Snell Memorial Foundation standards.
