How to Get Your Massachusetts Permit License

Under 18

  1. Apply for a learner's permit at 16

    Apply for a Massachusetts learner's permit starting at age 16, after passing the 25-question knowledge test (72%, 18 correct) within the 25-minute time limit, and a vision screening.

  2. Complete driver education

    Complete 18 hours of driver-education instruction: 12 hours behind-the-wheel, plus 6 hours observing another student's behind-the-wheel instruction.

  3. Log 40 hours of supervised driving

    Log at least 40 hours of supervised driving with a licensed driver at least 21 years old who has held a license for at least one year.

  4. Hold the permit at least 6 consecutive months

    Massachusetts requires holding the learner's permit for at least 6 consecutive months, with a clean driving record, before the road test.

  5. Apply for your Junior Operator License at 16 years 6 months

    Once you've turned 16 years 6 months and met the holding period, supervised-hour, and driver-education requirements, pass the road test to receive a Junior Operator License.

  6. Follow Junior Operator License restrictions

    For the first 6 months, carry no passengers under 18 outside immediate family (unless a qualifying 21+ supervisor rides along), and don't drive 12:30 a.m.-5 a.m. except with a parent or legal guardian.

  7. Move to a full license

    Once you turn 18, or complete the 6-month restricted period (whichever comes first), the Junior Operator restrictions lift automatically.

18 and Older

  1. Apply for a learner's permit

    Apply for a learner's permit at an RMV Service Center; driver education is not required for applicants 18 and older.

  2. Pass the knowledge test

    Pass the same 25-question knowledge test (72%, 18 correct) within the 25-minute time limit, and a vision screening.

  4. Receive your full license
