How to Get a CDL Permit in Michigan

Michigan requires proof of legal presence, a Medical Examination Report, and self-certification that you're medically qualified to drive commercially, plus a valid noncommercial Michigan driver's license before a CLP application can be processed.

Before your CLP is issued, renewed, transferred, or upgraded, Michigan checks the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse for any recorded drug or alcohol program violations — a federal requirement applied at every step.

At an SOS office, pass the general knowledge test for the class of CDL you're pursuing, plus combination-vehicle and air-brake tests if they apply to your training vehicle.

Each knowledge-test category allows only one attempt per day; a failed attempt means waiting until the next day to retry that same category, not an immediate retest.

Federal rule requires completing entry-level driver training (ELDT) through an FMCSA-registered provider — in Michigan, this generally happens after the CLP is issued but before the skills test.

Michigan's CLP is valid for 180 days and can be renewed once for another 180 days, giving you roughly a year total if needed, though federal rule still requires holding it at least 14 days before scheduling the skills test.
