How to Get Your Minnesota Motorcycle License

Standard Process

  1. Apply for a motorcycle instruction permit

    Apply at a driver exam station; you'll need to pass the motorcycle knowledge test and a vision screening.

  2. Pass the written knowledge test

    Pass the 25-question motorcycle knowledge test (80%, 20 correct).

  3. Wear required protective gear while practicing

    As an instruction permit holder, you must wear a helmet regardless of age, plus shatter-resistant eye protection unless the motorcycle has a windshield.

  4. Pass the skills test

    Pass the on-cycle skills test at a driver exam station to receive your motorcycle classification.

Approved Motorcycle Safety Course

  1. Enroll in an approved motorcycle safety course

    Enroll in a Minnesota-approved motorcycle safety course as an alternative to testing directly at a driver exam station.

  2. Complete the course

    Complete the classroom and on-motorcycle training required by the course provider.

  3. Have both tests waived

    Present your course completion certificate to the DVS; completing an approved course can waive both the written and skills tests for many applicants.

  4. Receive your motorcycle classification

    Once the waiver is processed, the motorcycle classification is added to your existing license.

Notes

  • A fully licensed rider 18 or older isn't required to wear a helmet in Minnesota — the requirement applies to instruction permit holders of any age and to riders under 18.
  • A motorcycle must occupy a full lane in Minnesota; lane splitting is not permitted at any time.
