How to Get Your Missouri CDL License

The actual step-by-step process, from application to full license — not just what's on the exam. Confirm anything time-sensitive (fees, forms) with Missouri DOR directly.

  1. Hold a valid Missouri driver's license

    You need a valid noncommercial Missouri driver's license before applying, and must be at least 18 to drive commercially within Missouri, or 21 to cross state lines or transport hazardous materials, under federal rules that apply nationwide.

  2. Get your DOT medical certificate

    Complete a DOT medical examination and self-certify to the DOR that you're medically qualified to operate a commercial vehicle.

  3. Pass the required written tests

    At a Missouri State Highway Patrol driver examination station, pass the General Knowledge test, plus the Air Brakes and Combination Vehicles tests if applicable to your training vehicle.

  4. Pay the fee and obtain your CLP

    Pay the $44 CLP fee — a $25 written exam fee, $10 permit transaction fee, and $9 office processing fee.

  5. Hold the CLP at least 14 days

    Federal rule requires holding the CLP for a minimum of 14 days before scheduling the skills test.

  6. Complete entry-level driver training (ELDT)

    Federal rule requires theory and behind-the-wheel training through an FMCSA-registered provider before the skills test.

  7. Schedule and pass the skills test

    Book the skills test: a pre-trip inspection and an on-road driving evaluation for the CDL class you applied for.

  8. Receive your CDL

    Once you pass, the DOR issues your Class A, B, or C commercial driver's license, with any endorsements reflecting the additional tests you passed.

Notes

  • Commercial drivers are held to a 0.04% BAC threshold, half the standard 0.08% figure that applies to a regular passenger-vehicle driver.
  • The Missouri State Highway Patrol, not the Department of Revenue, administers the CDL knowledge and skills tests, even though the DOR issues the license itself.
