How to Get Your Nebraska CDL License

The actual step-by-step process, from application to full license — not just what's on the exam. Confirm anything time-sensitive (fees, forms) with Nebraska DMV directly.

  1. Hold a valid noncommercial Nebraska license

You need a valid noncommercial Nebraska driver's license before applying, and must be at least 18 to drive commercially within Nebraska, or 21 to cross state lines or transport hazardous materials, under federal rules that apply nationwide.

  2. Get your medical certificate

Complete a medical examination confirming you meet federal physical standards to operate a commercial vehicle.

    • Medical Examiner's Certificate
  3. Pass the knowledge test(s)

Pass the General Knowledge test (50 questions, 80%, given in English in written form), plus combination-vehicle and air-brake tests if applicable.

  4. Pay the CLP fee at the County Treasurer's office

Pay about $15 (a $10 base fee plus a $5 security fee) to receive your commercial learner's permit.

  5. Complete entry-level driver training (ELDT)

Federal rule requires theory and behind-the-wheel training through an authorized provider before applying for your first CDL.

  6. Schedule and pass the skills test

Book the skills test: a pre-trip inspection and an on-road driving evaluation for the CDL class you applied for.

  7. Pay the license fee and receive your CDL

Pay about $60 for a 5-year Class A, B, or C commercial driver's license, with any endorsements reflecting the additional tests you passed.

Notes

  • Commercial drivers are held to a 0.04% BAC threshold, half the standard 0.08% figure that applies to a regular passenger-vehicle driver.
  • Nebraska routes CDL and driver's license fee payments through the County Treasurer's office rather than a centralized state DMV cashier.
  • Exact fees and required documents change over time — confirm the current process on the official Nebraska DMV website before your appointment.
