How to Get Your Nebraska Permit License

Under 18 (Graduated Licensing)

  1. Apply for a School Learner's Permit at 14, if enrolled in driver's ed

    A teen enrolled in a school driver's education program can apply for a School Learner's Permit (LPE) starting at 14, with a parent or guardian's signature.

    • Proof of identity and residency
    • Parent or legal guardian's signature
    • School driver's ed enrollment

  2. Otherwise, apply for a standard Learner's Permit 60 days before turning 15

    Apply at a DMV office with parent or guardian consent. Pass the 25-question knowledge test (80%, 20 correct), plus a vision test.

    • Birth certificate or equivalent
    • Proof of Social Security number and residency
    • Parent or guardian signature

  3. Drive only with a qualifying supervisor

    A licensed driver at least 21 years old must occupy the seat beside the driver at all times.

  4. Apply for a Provisional Operator's Permit 60 days before turning 16

    Once eligible, apply for a Provisional Operator's Permit (POP), which allows unsupervised driving under specific restrictions.

  5. Follow POP restrictions

    Drive unsupervised only between 6 a.m. and midnight; midnight-6 a.m. driving is limited to travel for home, work, or a school activity. For the first 6 months, carry no more than one passenger under 19 who isn't immediate family. No interactive wireless device use, even hands-free.

  6. Move to a full license at 18

    A full, unrestricted license becomes available at 18.

18 and Older

  1. Apply for a learner's permit

    Apply at a DMV office; the graduated stages and their restrictions apply only to an applicant who starts before turning 18.

  2. Pass the knowledge test

    Pass the same 25-question knowledge test (80%, 20 correct) and a vision test.

    • Proof of identity, Social Security number, and residency

  3. Practice and pass the road test

    Practice driving under the terms of your learner's permit, then pass the road test to receive your license.

  4. Receive your full license

    Adult first-time applicants receive a standard, unrestricted license upon passing.
