How to Get Your Nevada CDL License
The actual step-by-step process, from application to full license — not just what's on the exam. Confirm anything time-sensitive (fees, forms) with Nevada DMV directly.
Hold a valid noncommercial Nevada license
You need a valid original noncommercial Nevada driver's license before applying, and must be at least 18 to drive commercially within Nevada, or 21 to cross state lines, under federal rules that apply nationwide.
Get your medical certificate
Complete a physical exam with a certified medical examiner, unless you're excepted from this requirement.

Pass the vision and knowledge test(s)
Pass a vision test and the CDL knowledge test for the vehicle class you're pursuing, plus combination-vehicle and air-brake tests if applicable.

- Proof of Nevada residency
Pay the fee and obtain your CLP
Pay the $57.50 CLP fee to receive your Commercial Learner's Permit, valid for 180 days.
Hold the CLP at least 14 days
Federal rule requires holding the CLP for a minimum of 14 days before applying for the full CDL.
Complete required training
A first-time Class A or B applicant, or anyone upgrading Class B to A, must complete training from a provider listed in the federal Training Provider Registry.
Schedule and pass the skills test
Book the skills test for the CDL class you applied for.
Receive your CDL
Once you pass, the DMV issues your Class A, B, or C commercial driver's license, with any endorsements reflecting the additional tests you passed.

- Commercial drivers are held to a 0.04% BAC threshold, half the standard 0.08% figure that applies to a regular passenger-vehicle driver.
