How to Get Your Nevada Motorcycle License

Under 18

  1. Apply for a motorcycle instruction permit

    Apply at a DMV office; parental consent is required. Pass the motorcycle knowledge test and a vision test.

  2. Pass the written knowledge test

    Pass the 25-question motorcycle knowledge test (80%, 20 correct).

  3. Hold the permit 6 months and log 50 hours

    Hold the instruction permit for at least 6 months, logging 50 hours of supervised experience on the DMV drive log.

  4. Complete a motorcycle safety course

    Successfully complete an approved motorcycle safety course. If none is offered within 30 miles, complete 50 additional supervised hours instead.

  5. Wear required protective gear while practicing

    Every operator and passenger must wear a DOT-approved helmet whenever the bike is moving, regardless of age.

18 and Older

  1. Complete an approved safety course (optional but recommended)

    A rider 18 or older who completes an approved motorcycle safety (MSF) course isn't required to get an instruction permit at all.

  2. Pass the written knowledge test

    Pass the 25-question motorcycle knowledge test (80%, 20 correct) if not waived by course completion.

  3. Pass the skills test

    Pass the motorcycle skills evaluation to receive the license.

  • Nevada's helmet law has no age exemption of any kind — every rider and passenger must wear a DOT-approved helmet.
