How to Get Your New Hampshire Motorcycle License

The actual step-by-step process, from application to full license — not just what's on the exam. Confirm anything time-sensitive (fees, forms) with NH DMV directly.

  1. Apply for a motorcycle permit

    Pass the 25-question motorcycle knowledge test (80%, 20 correct) at the DMV to receive your motorcycle permit.

  2. Practice under permit restrictions

    The permit is valid for 45 days and can be renewed once, for up to 90 days total. A permit holder may not carry a passenger or ride on a limited-access highway.

  3. Pass the skills test

    Schedule and pass a road skills test to complete the licensing process.

  4. Receive your M endorsement

    Once you pass, the M endorsement is added to your existing driver's license — New Hampshire doesn't issue motorcycle riders a separate standalone license class.

Notes

  • New Hampshire has no motorcycle helmet law at all, for any rider at any age — one of only a handful of states nationwide with no requirement whatsoever.
  • Eye protection is still required unless the motorcycle has a windscreen.
