How to Get Your New Jersey CDL License

The actual step-by-step process, from application to full license — not just what's on the exam. Confirm anything time-sensitive (fees, forms) with NJ MVC directly.

  1. Hold a valid New Jersey driver's license

    You need a valid noncommercial New Jersey driver's license before applying, and must be at least 18 to drive commercially within New Jersey, or 21 to cross state lines or transport hazardous materials, under federal rules that apply nationwide.

  2. Complete the 6 Points of ID Verification

    Complete Form BA-208C and pass New Jersey's 6 Points of ID Verification, which specifically requires presenting a Social Security card for an initial CLP and test receipt.

  3. Get your DOT medical certificate

    Complete a DOT medical examination and self-certify to the MVC that you're medically qualified to operate a commercial vehicle.

  4. Pay the fee and pass the knowledge test(s)

    Pay the $125 non-refundable commercial examination test-receipt fee and pass the general knowledge test, plus combination-vehicle and air-brake tests if applicable to your training vehicle.

  5. Obtain your CLP

    Return to a motor vehicle agency to obtain your Commercial Learner Permit, valid for 180 days.

  6. Hold the CLP at least 14 days

    Federal rule requires holding the CLP for a minimum of 14 days before scheduling the skills test.

  7. Complete entry-level driver training (ELDT)

    Federal rule requires theory and behind-the-wheel training through an FMCSA-registered provider before the skills test.

  8. Renew if needed, then pass the skills test

    If multiple road test attempts are needed after the CLP's 180-day window lapses, renew both the CLP and test receipt, then pass the skills test: a pre-trip inspection and an on-road evaluation.

  9. Receive your CDL

    Once you pass, the MVC issues your Class A, B, or C commercial driver's license, with any endorsements reflecting the additional tests you passed.
