How to Get Your New Jersey Motorcycle License

Take the MVC Written and Skills Tests

  1. Apply for a motorcycle permit

    Apply at an MVC testing center; you'll need to pass both a written knowledge test and a vision test before the permit is issued.

  2. Pass the written knowledge test

    Pass the 50-question motorcycle written knowledge test (80%, 40 correct) — the same length as New Jersey's regular car permit test, unlike many states where the motorcycle test is shorter.

    Practice riding under the terms of your motorcycle permit before scheduling the skills test.

  4. Pass the skills test

    Pass the on-cycle skills test at an MVC facility to have the motorcycle endorsement added to your license.

Complete an Approved Safety Course

    Enroll in a New Jersey MVC-approved motorcycle safety course as an alternative to testing directly at an MVC facility.

  2. Complete the course

    Complete the classroom and on-motorcycle training required by the course provider.

  3. Have both tests waived

    Present your course completion certificate to the MVC; completing an approved course can waive both the written knowledge test and the skills test for many applicants.

  4. Receive your motorcycle endorsement

    Once the waiver is processed, the motorcycle endorsement is added to your existing license.
