How to Get Your New Jersey Permit License

Age 16 (Special Learner's Permit)

  1. Enroll in an approved driver education program

    Enroll in a high school or licensed driving school's driver education program — required before a 16-year-old can apply for a special learner's permit.

    Pass the 50-question written knowledge test (80%, 40 correct) and a vision screening at an MVC testing center, in person — New Jersey has no online testing option.

  5. Log 50 hours of supervised driving

    Log at least 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 at night, and hold the permit at least 6 months before scheduling the road test.

  6. Pass the road test at 17

    Once you've turned 17 and met the holding period and hour requirements, pass the road test to receive a probationary license.

  7. Upgrade to a basic license

    Upgrade the probationary license to a full basic license online after one year of unsupervised driving.

Age 17+ (Examination Permit)

    Applicants 17 or older can skip the driving-school route required at 16 and apply directly for an examination permit.
