How to Get Your New York Motorcycle License

The actual step-by-step process, from application to full license — not just what's on the exam. Confirm anything time-sensitive (fees, forms) with NY DMV directly.

Under 18 (Class MJ)

  1. Get your motorcycle learner permit

    Pass the 20-question written test (at least 14 correct, 70%, including at least 2 of the 4 road-sign questions) and a vision test at a DMV office. The minimum age is 16.

    • Proof of identity
    • Proof of date of birth
    • Proof of New York residency

  2. Complete a pre-licensing or driver education course

    If you don't already hold another class of New York driver license, you must complete a pre-licensing course or a school driver education course before scheduling a road test.

  3. Practice riding and wait out the holding period

    Riders under 18 must wait at least 6 months from the date the learner permit was issued before scheduling the road test. At least 30 hours of practice riding is recommended, including 10 hours in medium-to-high-volume traffic.

  4. Pass the road test, or complete an MSF Basic RiderCourse to waive it

    Present a Basic RiderCourse (BRC) or BRC2-LW completion card from the New York State Motorcycle Safety Program, issued within the last 2 years, to waive the DMV road test — otherwise take the road test directly.

  5. Receive your Class MJ license

    Riders 16-17 receive a junior motorcycle license (Class MJ); at 17, a driver education certificate can qualify you for the full Class M instead.

18 and Older (Class M)

  1. Get your motorcycle learner permit

    Pass the 20-question written test (at least 14 correct, 70%, including at least 2 of the 4 road-sign questions) and a vision test at a DMV office.

    • Proof of New York residency

  2. Practice riding

    There's no mandatory waiting period at this age, but at least 30 hours of practice riding is recommended, including 10 hours in medium-to-high-volume traffic, before scheduling the road test.

  3. Pass the road test, or complete an MSF Basic RiderCourse to waive it

    If you already hold another class of New York driver license along with your motorcycle learner permit, completing the Motorcycle Safety Foundation's Basic RiderCourse waives the DMV road test. Present your completion card, issued within the last 2 years, in place of testing.

  4. Receive your Class M license

    Once you pass the road test (or submit your qualifying course completion card), the DMV adds the Class M motorcycle license.
