How to Get Your North Dakota Motorcycle License

The actual step-by-step process, from application to full license — not just what's on the exam. Confirm anything time-sensitive (fees, forms) with NDDOT directly.

  1. Pass the knowledge test

Pass the 25-question motorcycle knowledge test (80%, 20 correct) at a DOT office.

  2. Pass the skills test

Schedule and pass a skills test to complete the endorsement process.

  3. Receive your endorsement

Once you pass, the motorcycle endorsement is added to your existing driver's license.

  4. Follow the operator-linked helmet rule

A helmet is required for an operator or passenger under 18. If the operator is under 18, every passenger must also wear one, regardless of the passenger's own age.

Notes

  • The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) manages motorcycle licensing statewide.
  • The helmet requirement doesn't apply within an enclosed cab, on a golf cart, or during a lawful parade.
  • Sustained prairie crosswinds are a genuine road hazard worth planning for. Exact fees and current procedures change over time — confirm the current process with the official NDDOT website before you ride.
