How to Get a CDL Permit in Ohio

You'll need a valid noncommercial Ohio driver's license, plus documents proving your legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, citizenship or lawful permanent residency, and Ohio residential address.

A DOT medical examination and certificate confirming you meet federal physical qualification standards is required before the BMV will issue anything.

Study the Ohio CDL Handbook, then visit any driver exam station to take the knowledge test(s) for the class and endorsements you want. Once you pass, you purchase the CLP itself and self-certify the type of commercial driving you intend to do.

The CLP is valid for 12 months from issue — notably longer than the 180-day window used in many other states, which matters if your training schedule stretches out.

Ohio specifically requires your entry-level driver training provider to submit electronic proof of ELDT completion (or a documented exemption) matching the class and endorsement on your CLP — Ohio's BMV won't schedule or accept a skills test appointment without that electronic record on file.

Federal rule separately requires holding the CLP at least 14 days before the skills test, which typically isn't the binding constraint in Ohio given the ELDT documentation step.
