How to Get Your Ohio Motorcycle License

The actual step-by-step process, from application to full license — not just what's on the exam. Confirm anything time-sensitive (fees, forms) with Ohio BMV directly.

Under 18

  1. Complete probationary license requirements and driver education

    Before testing for a motorcycle endorsement, riders under 18 must meet Ohio's probationary driver license requirements, including 24 hours of classroom or online driver education, 8 hours of driving time with an approved school, and 50 hours of supervised driving (at least 10 at night).

  2. Pass the motorcycle knowledge exam

    Take the written test in person at a driver exam station — the online testing option requires being 18 with an active Ohio license, so it isn't available to minors. After passing, you have a 60-day window to visit a deputy registrar agency.

  3. Get your TIPIC (Temporary Instruction Permit)

    Visit a deputy registrar's office within 60 days of passing the knowledge exam. A parent or guardian must accompany you and give written permission for applicants under 18.

  4. Pass the skills test or complete a Motorcycle Ohio course

    Take the BMV's off-street skills test directly, or complete a Motorcycle Ohio training course that includes the skills test at the end — either path satisfies the requirement. You must wear a helmet and protective eyewear, and your motorcycle must be street-legal.

  5. Get your endorsement

    Within 60 days of passing (or before your TIPIC expires, whichever comes first), visit a deputy registrar agency to purchase the motorcycle or motor scooter endorsement.

18 and Older

  1. Pass the motorcycle knowledge exam

    Take the test in person at a driver exam station, or online through Ohio BMV Online Services if you already hold an active Ohio Class D license or CDL. If you fail, you must wait 24 hours before retesting, with no limit on attempts.

  2. Get your TIPIC (Temporary Instruction Permit)

    Visit a deputy registrar's office within 60 days of passing the knowledge exam and vision screening to receive your Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card.

  3. Pass the skills test or complete a Motorcycle Ohio course

    Take the BMV's off-street skills test directly, or complete a Motorcycle Ohio training course that includes the skills test at the end — the course completion card waives BMV skills testing for 60 days from issuance. If you fail any part of the BMV skills test, you must wait one week to retest.

  4. Get your endorsement

    Within 60 days of passing (or before your TIPIC expires, whichever comes first), visit a deputy registrar agency to purchase the motorcycle or motor scooter endorsement.

Notes

  • The minimum age for a TIPIC is 15½; a full motorcycle endorsement requires being at least 16.
