How to Get Your Oklahoma CDL License

The actual step-by-step process, from application to full license — not just what's on the exam. Confirm anything time-sensitive (fees, forms) with Service Oklahoma directly.

  1. Hold a valid Oklahoma Class D license

    You need a valid noncommercial Oklahoma Class D license before applying, and must be at least 18 to drive commercially within Oklahoma, or 21 to cross state lines or transport hazardous materials, under federal rules that apply nationwide.

  2. Get your medical certificate

    Complete a DOT medical examination confirming you meet federal physical standards to operate a commercial vehicle.

  3. Pass the knowledge test(s)

    Pass the General Knowledge test, plus combination-vehicle and air-brake tests if applicable, in person at a Service Oklahoma Licensing Office.

  4. Pay the fee and obtain your CLP

    Pay the CLP application fee — $25 for Class A, $15 for Class B or C — to receive your Commercial Learner's Permit.

  5. Hold the CLP at least 14 days

    Hold the CLP for a minimum of 14 full days before scheduling the skills test.

  6. Complete entry-level driver training (ELDT)

    Since February 2022, federal rule requires theory and behind-the-wheel training through an authorized provider before applying for your first CDL.

  7. Schedule and pass the skills test

    Book the skills test: a pre-trip inspection and an on-road driving evaluation for the CDL class you applied for.

  8. Receive your CDL

    Once you pass, Service Oklahoma issues your Class A, B, or C commercial driver's license, with any endorsements reflecting the additional tests you passed.

  • Commercial drivers are held to a 0.04% BAC threshold, half the standard 0.08% figure that applies to a regular passenger-vehicle driver.
  • A complete Oklahoma CDL runs roughly $153 total, combining the CLP application, credential fees, and other charges by class.
