How to Get Your Oklahoma Permit License

The actual step-by-step process, from application to full license — not just what's on the exam. Confirm anything time-sensitive (fees, forms) with Service Oklahoma directly.

Under 18 (Graduated Licensing)

  1. Apply for a learner permit at 15½ or 16

    Apply at a Service Oklahoma Licensing Office at 15½ if enrolled in driver education, or 16 without it. Pass the 50-question knowledge test (80%, 40 correct) and a vision test.

    • Parent or guardian signature

  2. Drive only within permitted hours and with a supervisor

    Drive from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., accompanied by a supervising driver at least 21 years old.

  3. Hold the permit at least 180 days

    Oklahoma requires holding the learner permit for at least 180 days before applying for an intermediate license.

  4. Complete the WorkZone Safe Course if under 18

    Complete the free Oklahoma WorkZone Safe Course, required to receive an intermediate license if you're under 18.

  5. Apply for your intermediate license at 16

    Once you've turned 16 and met the holding-period and course requirements, receive an intermediate license.

  6. Follow intermediate license restrictions

    The in-vehicle supervisor requirement lifts, but the 5 a.m.-10 p.m. curfew remains, with exceptions for school, church, work, or a licensed driver 21 or older. One non-household passenger is allowed; more require a licensed adult along.

  7. Move to an unrestricted license at 16½

    Reach a full, unrestricted license at 16½, provided all earlier GDL stages and requirements were completed.

18 and Older

  1. Apply for a learner permit

    Apply at a Service Oklahoma Licensing Office; the driver-education age fork, WorkZone Safe Course, and GDL restrictions apply only to an applicant who starts before turning 18.

  2. Pass the knowledge test

    Pass the same 50-question knowledge test (80%, 40 correct) and a vision test.

  3. Practice and pass the road test

    Practice driving under the terms of your learner permit, then pass the road test to receive your license.

  4. Receive your full license

    Adult first-time applicants receive a standard, unrestricted license upon passing.

Notes

  • A Farm Driving Permit, effective November 1, 2023, is a separate alternative available to teens aged 14-17 on farms.
  • Service Oklahoma, not the Department of Public Safety, has administered driver licensing since January 2023.
