Can You Take the Oregon Permit Test Online?
Yes — Oregon is one of the few states where most applicants can take the actual knowledge test online, through a system called DMV2U, rather than visiting a DMV office.
How DMV2U actually works
Testing happens on a desktop or laptop computer with a keyboard, mouse, and webcam — a phone or tablet touchscreen isn't accepted. The webcam takes a photo of you at the start of the test, plus random photos throughout, to confirm you're the one actually testing.
An applicant under 18 needs a Proctor at least 21 years old supervising in person during the test; that same proctor can only oversee two tests in any 24-hour period.
The limits on retaking it online
You can attempt the test online up to twice in a 24-hour period, and four times total. After a fourth online attempt, any further tries have to happen at a DMV office instead.
A DMV office visit — by standby service or a DMV2U-scheduled appointment — remains available for anyone who prefers testing in person from the start.
Getting the most out of practice beforehand
Since you're likely testing alone at your own computer, treat a full practice test the same way you'd treat the real one — no notes open, no pausing partway through.
Read the explanation behind every answer, right or wrong, since understanding the reasoning sticks longer than memorizing which letter to pick, especially with a hard cap on total attempts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does every Oregon applicant qualify to test online?
Most do, but an applicant under 18 needs an in-person proctor at least 21 years old supervising the online session.
Are online practice tests the same as the official DMV2U exam?
No. Practice tests, including ours, are independent study tools with original questions meant to build your knowledge of the same topics — they aren't administered by Oregon DMV.
How many times can I attempt the test online before switching to a DMV office?
Up to four times total online, no more than twice in any 24-hour period.
