How to Get Your Oregon CDL License

The actual step-by-step process, from application to full license — not just what's on the exam. Confirm anything time-sensitive (fees, forms) with Oregon DMV directly.

  1. Hold a valid Oregon Class C license

    You need a valid noncommercial Oregon Class C license before applying, and must be at least 18 to drive commercially within Oregon, or 21 to cross state lines or transport hazardous materials, under federal rules that apply nationwide.

  2. Provide required documents and self-certify

    Provide proof of your full legal name, citizenship or lawful permanent residence, identity, date of birth, and residence address, plus your Social Security number.

  3. Pass the knowledge test(s)

    Pass the General Knowledge test at $10 per attempt, plus combination-vehicle and air-brake tests if applicable to your training vehicle. Results stay valid for 6 months.

  4. Pay the fee and obtain your CLP

    Pay the $40 CLP application fee to receive your Commercial Learner's Permit.

  5. Complete entry-level driver training (ELDT)

    A first-time Class A or B applicant, or anyone adding a passenger, school bus, or hazmat endorsement for the first time, must complete ELDT through an FMCSA-registered provider.

  6. Schedule and pass the skills test

    Schedule the skills test with a Third Party CDL Tester, not DMV staff directly: a pre-trip inspection and an on-road driving evaluation for the CDL class you applied for.

  7. Receive your CDL

    Once you pass, DMV issues your Class A, B, or C commercial driver's license, with any endorsements reflecting the additional tests you passed.

Notes

  • Commercial drivers are held to a 0.04% BAC threshold, half the standard 0.08% figure that applies to a regular passenger-vehicle driver.
  • Oregon's 6-month knowledge test validity window means completing your CLP application promptly matters — a lapse forces a retake of every written test.
