Age, license type, riding experience — none of it changes the requirement. A rider who's been licensed for decades faces the exact same helmet rule as someone on a brand-new instruction permit.

The helmet has to be DOT-approved; a bicycle helmet or anything not built and rated for motorcycle impact doesn't satisfy the law, even if it technically covers the head.

Beyond a citation, riding without a helmet can follow you into a crash claim: a court can find a rider or passenger partially at fault for their own injuries for not wearing one, even in a crash the other driver caused, and reduce the compensation awarded accordingly.

That's a separate, civil-law consequence layered on top of the criminal traffic violation for noncompliance itself.
