How to Get Your Oregon Motorcycle License

The actual step-by-step process, from application to full license — not just what's on the exam. Confirm anything time-sensitive (fees, forms) with Oregon DMV directly.

Standard DMV Path

  1. Hold an Oregon driver license

    You need a valid Oregon driver license, and must be at least 16 years old with parental or guardian consent if under 18.

  2. Pass the written knowledge test

    Pass the 25-question motorcycle knowledge test (80%, 20 correct) — 10 fewer questions than the state's 35-question regular permit test.

  3. Wear required protective gear while practicing

    Oregon's helmet law is fully universal — you must wear a DOT-approved helmet, regardless of age.

  4. Pass the skills test

    Pass the motorcycle skills evaluation to have the endorsement added to your license.

Team Oregon Rider Training Path

  1. Complete the in-person Basic Rider Training course

    Finishing Team Oregon's in-person Basic Rider Training course, open to riders 16 and older, waives both the DMV knowledge and skills tests.

  2. Or complete an Intermediate or online course

    Team Oregon's Intermediate course (21+) or either online classroom option only waives the skills test — you'd still need to pass the written knowledge test.

  3. Receive your endorsement

    Present your course completion certificate to DMV to add the motorcycle endorsement, skipping whichever DMV tests your course waived.

Notes

  • Oregon's helmet law has no age exemption — every rider and passenger must wear a DOT-approved helmet at all times.
  • Riding without a helmet can reduce a crash-injury settlement by assigning partial fault, even in a crash the other driver caused.
