How to Get Your Rhode Island CDL License

  1. Decide your class and gather original documents

    Decide which class (A, B, or C) and any endorsements you'll need up front — a Class A applicant studies an additional Combination Vehicles section. Bring only original documents or certified copies — photocopies aren't accepted.

  2. Get your medical certificate

    Complete a medical examination confirming you meet federal physical standards to operate a commercial vehicle.

  3. Pay $11.50 and pass the knowledge test(s)

  4. Receive your CLP

    Federal rule requires theory and behind-the-wheel training through an authorized provider before applying for your first CDL.

  6. Schedule and pass the skills test

    Book the skills test: a pre-trip inspection and an on-road driving evaluation for the CDL class you applied for.

  7. Receive your CDL

    Once you pass, receive your Class A, B, or C commercial driver's license, with any endorsements reflecting the additional tests you passed.
